JustinSo next up, we're going to pop down to the crew room for a little glass of red wine and listen to Nobby and the Rev to hear about their story and the Port of Bristol Shanty Crew.
Steve HawkinsHi, Justine, Justin, my old darling.
JustinHello, gentlemen.
JustinHow the devil are you?
NobbyVery, very well, very well.
JustinGood.
JustinThat is great to hear.
JustinSo first up, let's get yourself introducing yourself to the listeners.
NobbyNobby.
NobbyIan.
NobbyThe Nobby die.
NobbyYeah, the Rev Hawkins.
NobbyAnd we've been singing together since about 1983.
Steve HawkinsYeah, yeah.
Nobby983.
NobbyYeah.
NobbyAnd I first met him when I was teaching it.
NobbyLock lease in the first week I heard this dulcet tones coming up the corridor.
NobbyScience teacher.
NobbyAnd I thought, that sounds good.
NobbySo I nipped out in a corridor.
Steve HawkinsCorridor, see it now coming out for.
NobbyThe door and we started singing together.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
Steve HawkinsRosabella.
NobbyYeah, Whatever it might have been.
Steve HawkinsYeah, I think it was Rosabella.
NobbyYeah.
NobbyYeah.
NobbyAnd the rest is history.
Steve HawkinsMorning in the month of May One.
NobbyMore day Morning in the month of May I thought I heard the old man say the Rosabella will sell Today.
JustinNo, no, it's all right.
JustinIt's all right.
JustinOf course.
JustinNo problem at all.
JustinSo, Nobby, what I'd like you do is just to let us know your history.
JustinHow did you get yourself into Shishanti?
Steve HawkinsIt started off way back in about nine, the late 60s.
JustinOkay.
Steve HawkinsAt the time I was working at the Bristol Omnibus Company as a coach painter.
JustinOkay.
Steve HawkinsAnd the sign writer played a guitar.
Steve HawkinsAnd I fancied doing a bit of guitar stuff and only things I know are Se Shan is.
Steve HawkinsAnd I got a guitar but I couldn't play it.
Steve HawkinsAnd we went to the Lamb Iron Acton Little Folk Club and stood up to do a Malvinia Records.
Steve HawkinsWhat have they Done to the Rain?
Steve HawkinsAnd it was a total mess up.
JustinOh, no.
Steve HawkinsSo I abandoned the guitar and I started singing sh.
Steve HawkinsWith an old mate of mine called John Brumad.
NobbyBrumad.
NobbyWhat a guy.
Steve HawkinsAnd yeah, that's how we started off.
Steve HawkinsWasn't there John Broomhead?
Steve HawkinsHe was great guy, the late John Brumad, sadly.
Steve HawkinsHe was such a character.
NobbyOh, yeah.
Steve HawkinsAnd then we did a bit and then I got.
Steve HawkinsI was teaching.
Steve HawkinsThen it lock leaves and as.
Steve HawkinsAs the Rev said, you know, I was walking down a corridor one day singing the Rosabella and.
NobbyBelieve it, couldn't believe it.
NobbyJustin.
NobbyYes.
NobbyIn front of a class.
NobbyI was a science teacher.
NobbyI had me bench, you know, with me bunch and goodness knows what.
JustinYeah.
NobbyAnd all the kids there.
NobbyAnd I heard these dulcet tones and I thought, there's a singer.
NobbyI think that's a good tuna.
NobbyI soon picked up the chorus and I went up, opened the door, left all the kids there and started joining in the chorus.
JustinAmazing.
NobbyAnd Nobby said, here, who are you?
NobbyThen I said, I'm Steve Hawkins.
NobbyI've just started last week.
NobbyAnd he said, right, you're in the group.
NobbyAnd we joined.
NobbyI joined up with the Harry Brown.
NobbyHarry Brown Shackley Men of Bristol.
NobbyYeah.
JustinWow.
JustinAnd that was back in 1985 when you.
JustinYeah, back in the day.
JustinBack in the day.
JustinAnd then.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
JustinExcellent.
JustinAnd so you.
JustinYou became a group.
JustinYou became a band.
JustinIt was a group of others together.
JustinAnd.
JustinAnd.
JustinAnd of course the rest, I guess, is history.
JustinBut right now you've clearly got both amazing voices.
JustinYou're very distinctively Bristolian.
JustinAnd now you're part of this wonderful Bristol Gas Heads.
NobbyGas Heads.
NobbyBoth of us.
NobbyYeah.
NobbyGas.
JustinThe gas.
NobbyIrene, Good night, Irene.
NobbyIrene, good night.
NobbyGood night, Irene.
NobbyGood night, Irene.
NobbyI'll see you in my dreams.
NobbyIn fact, as you know, Justin.
JustinYeah.
NobbyI'm a priest in the Church of England.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
NobbyI was once chaplain to Bristol Rovers.
JustinWow.
NobbyTo say it's helped my preaching no end, has it?
NobbyAs it gave me.
NobbyYeah.
NobbyIt gave me an insight into pain and misery otherwise I would never.
NobbyI've gathered so well done Rovers at the gas, mate.
NobbyYeah, go down.
Steve HawkinsUsed to take me down.
NobbyI did.
Steve HawkinsSit me up in the blinking direction.
NobbyYes, I did.
NobbyYeah.
Steve HawkinsAnd the commissioner would say.
Steve HawkinsAll right Rev, have you got a prayer for us today?
NobbyWell, it never worked out, did it?
NobbyThe problem is Justin, is that while I was traveling I'll travel for about four or five years until I moved away from the area.
NobbyAnd during that time they sort of plummeted, you know, through the divisions.
NobbyThrough the league.
NobbyYeah, through league one, into league two.
NobbyAnd I tried everything, Justin, go on the center line.
NobbyMade no difference.
NobbyAnd so I had to move away and I nominated someone else to be chaplain.
NobbyGreat guy called Dave Jewellery.
JustinOkay.
NobbyAnd blow me, blow me.
NobbyHe got appointed and the next week they started winning, started winning and they started going up the league and they were promoted.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
JustinWow.
NobbyWhere was God in all that, Justin?
JustinI do not know but there's probably a thing.
JustinThere's a paper in that somewhere.
JustinOh my goodness.
NobbyMust be.
JustinSo the Port of Bristol shanty crew it's just grown from popularity.
JustinEveryone loves a good old fashioned she shanty and of course you now with.
JustinWith other like minded souls sing regularly.
JustinI bet you guys are really proud of what it's done and where it is now.
Steve HawkinsYeah, very much so.
Steve HawkinsAnd it all sparked off one day when was going down to the camp of Bin and putting away the theatrical set, all the props, props and Arthur Grannon who's one of our singers said oh you know one of those two lads sing over there.
Steve HawkinsSo I went back into the lodge room, you know, which was empty.
Steve HawkinsI said oh I.
Steve HawkinsI hear you sing.
Steve HawkinsNo, no, no, no, I hear you sing.
Steve HawkinsThat's it, you're in the group.
Steve HawkinsAnd told the Rev about it and that was it.
NobbyYeah, we nobody know how to meet in here in a sense.
NobbyWe had a meeting, we had a few points around the table.
JustinThat's the best kind of meeting.
NobbyAnd we said, you know, we ought to form a new shanty group.
NobbyYeah, Arthur Grannon and I wrote, I emailed people like John Hayes and Mike Whitworth and Mike Page and Andy Moore and loads of others.
NobbyYeah, good old Bill.
NobbyAnd I sent him an email saying I'm gonna make you an offer you can't refuse.
NobbyThat was what I Said, yeah, yeah.
NobbyTo offer you the opportunity to join what will become the finest shanty group in the southwest of England, if not England itself.
Steve HawkinsThat's right.
NobbyAnd they couldn't refuse England St George.
NobbyYeah, they didn't.
NobbyThey didn't refuse.
NobbyAnd so we all got together and they.
NobbyThey hadn't sung shanties at all.
NobbyOne of them had a bloke called Skipper.
NobbyOkay, yeah.
NobbyTerry Gunnery, the next Welsh minor.
NobbyYeah.
JustinIt's in his jeans.
JustinIt's in his jeans.
NobbyYeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
NobbySo we all got together and at first it was slow going.
NobbyThey had to learn how to sing, learn the choruses and do you know what?
NobbyThe learning curve was so steep.
NobbyAnd they were absolutely brilliant.
NobbyAnd before too long we were singing together, they'd learned songs, you know, the pressure was off me and Nobby knew a few, did.
NobbyHe did.
NobbyMike knew a few.
NobbySo he went from there and it.
NobbyTo be honest, actually.
NobbyWhat a guy.
Steve HawkinsHe loves doing his.
Steve HawkinsHe likes wearing hats.
Steve HawkinsDoes, actually.
NobbyOh, he does.
NobbyHe's a big hat wearer.
Steve HawkinsHe's big hat wearer.
NobbyAnd Shuffer wears hats as well.
Steve HawkinsOh, yes.
NobbyAndy Moore, he's a big hat wearer.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
Steve HawkinsI don't know how many acts he's gone.
NobbyYeah, loads of them.
NobbyLoads of arts he has.
JustinAnd.
JustinAnd you don't just sing old school Shanti.
JustinYou, you obviously try and find even modern tunes or even write your own, I hear.
NobbyYeah.
NobbyOh, can I just introduce this young man here?
NobbyThis is, as you know, not only was he one of the best teachers, one of the best I've ever worked with, but he is an artist.
NobbyBut I'll tell you a little story, Justin.
NobbyWhen he worked on the buses, all right, down at Lawrence Hill.
NobbyWas it Lawrence Hill?
NobbyAnd he had to spray all the buses green?
NobbyNo, no.
Steve HawkinsPainted with a paintbrush.
NobbyYes, painted with a paintbrush.
JustinThey didn't have that modern technology back then.
Steve HawkinsSpray them.
Steve HawkinsThey do now.
NobbyHe got into the habit of draw of painting sea scenes, ships, suns of the ocean, and when the foreman came round, he had to paint them all out.
Steve HawkinsYeah, yeah.
NobbyHis mate said to him, look, you're pretty good at this.
NobbyYeah, you want to go to college.
NobbyAnd he did.
NobbyHe went to teacher training college and he became an art teacher.
NobbyOne of the best I've ever known.
JustinWow.
Steve HawkinsGot a degree.
NobbyLeft school with nothing and now.
JustinAnd now you've got everything.
JustinSo, you know, it's amazing.
NobbyHe was amazing, brilliant guy.
NobbyBut anyway, I was going to say, yeah, not only the art, he.
NobbyHe is a genius.
JustinAll Right.
NobbyThis man is a veritable genius because he is a composer, a writer of contemporary songs of the sea.
NobbyWow.
NobbyParticularly Bristol.
NobbyYeah.
NobbyBristol songs like Welsh Back Key.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
NobbyThe Corn Crate.
Steve HawkinsCorn Crate, Juno.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
NobbyWritten songs that are sung by other shanti groups all over.
NobbyI'm not exaggerating.
NobbyAll over the world.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
JustinWow.
NobbyHe is a prince among men.
NobbyA genius.
NobbyA convertible genius of a composer.
NobbyI stand in awe of this man.
JustinAnd such an honor to have him on board.
JustinHey.
JustinIt's so fantastic.
JustinLovely.
JustinWell, you know, one of the biggest motivators I can see is you guys getting together, having a bit of a laugh, a sing song.
JustinIt, obviously it helps you with your.
JustinWith your heart and your health and just being together, which is great.
Steve HawkinsBut we love, love it.
JustinThere's clearly another good reason because you, you give up your time freely to raise money for an important charity.
JustinTell us all about this.
JustinSo what.
JustinWhy, out of all the charities in the world, have we gone for Teenage Cancer Trust, which obviously is an amazing charity.
JustinTell us a bit more about that.
Steve HawkinsWell, we.
Steve HawkinsWe started off to raise a thousand pounds.
JustinOkay.
Nobby19 months ago.
Steve Hawkins19 months ago.
Steve HawkinsAnd now we've raised 27, 000 pounds.
JustinWow.
JustinThat is phenomenal, isn't it?
NobbyIt is, yeah.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
NobbyI mean, that's all due to the fact that we don't take any money for ourselves.
Steve HawkinsEvery.
NobbyEvery fee that we get for singing, which sometimes can go as high as 5, 10 pounds, we don't charge anything and we put it straight into the kitty, give it to Teenage Cancer Trust and all the collections.
NobbyWe've got a wonderful woman called Teresa, Ian's wife, who goes around with a bucket and threatens people, you know, physical.
Steve HawkinsDamage, usually when they're opening their wallet.
NobbyYeah, it is.
NobbyBut the other thing is, you need to know, Justin, is the reason behind it is because my wife Caroline and myself, yeah, our friend Louise and.
NobbyAnd Mike Pages and Lynn's friend, very sadly, her son Harry.
NobbyHarry was diagnosed with terminal, uh, brain cancer.
JustinOkay.
NobbyAnd it was.
NobbyAnd it was the support the Teenage Cancer Trust gave not only to Harry, but to the family.
NobbyIt motivated us.
NobbyIt was a personal connection that this poor lad.
NobbyAnd he's a hell of a good lad.
NobbyHe's so fantastic.
NobbyHe's a star.
NobbyIt actually moved us.
JustinYeah, No, I can imagine.
NobbyThat's the charity we're going to stand for.
JustinYeah.
JustinAnd quite rightly so.
JustinI think it's an amazing charity.
JustinThey do such amazing work, but they can't do that without finance.
JustinAnd it's great that that the Port of Shanty Crew is.
JustinIs.
JustinIs financing them, which, you know, obviously a thousand pounds is a lot of money to even think about raising to start off with, when we live in a world where you struggle to either heat your home or eat.
JustinAnd now over 25, 29, 000, it was unbelievable about money.
NobbyYeah, well, dear old Harry, he was 19 when he got this news.
NobbyI don't think people expected him to get to his next Christmas, you know.
NobbyYeah, he's 21 now.
JustinWow.
JustinOkay.
NobbyHey, it's a 21 today actually.
NobbyIs it?
NobbyHarry, birthday.
NobbyHappy birthday, Harry.
JustinHappy birthday, Harry.
NobbyHe's getting on, you know.
Steve HawkinsGood thing is you and Caroline are going up to the Royal Albert Hall.
NobbyYes, we are.
Steve HawkinsTo support the county group at the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Steve HawkinsWhat is it?
Steve HawkinsConvention?
NobbyWell, it's a series of concerts that they do every year and they have like a reception for people beforehand and we got two tickets for the Shanty crew to go up to this.
NobbyI mean, Roger Daltrey of the who, one of my favorite groups, Very much involved, has been for years.
NobbyAnd so they invited.
NobbyThey only had two tickets because they're like gold dust, you know, because we've raised all this amount of money.
NobbyEveryone who's been invited are fundraisers and.
JustinYeah.
NobbyGot two tickets.
NobbyAnd the group, the shanty group, my dear, dear friends wanted Caroline and myself.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
NobbyBecause of our connection with Harry.
NobbyYeah.
NobbyGo up and represent the group and we're going to go up, aren't we?
NobbyYeah, it's gonna be good.
JustinWell, you're gonna have to record some audio from what you hear and.
JustinYeah.
JustinFor the podcast.
JustinI think people are going to want to hear your story and your journey.
JustinI think it'll be good.
JustinIt'll be good.
JustinWow.
JustinWell, fantastic, chaps.
JustinThis has been such a great time to talk to you and.
JustinAnd like I said before, you must be so proud of the Achie way that the Port of Bristol Shanty Crew has grown from strength to strength.
JustinWhat next?
JustinTaking over the world of shanty.
JustinCruz around.
NobbyGo on, mate.
Steve HawkinsWants to go to Glastonbury.
JustinGlastonbury.
JustinOkay, we're getting close.
NobbyWe're getting close.
NobbyLaughing well, show on the pil stage.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
NobbyAnd Michael Eis Goer, I have been an avid Glastonbury attendee, but just as a punter for a number of years.
JustinNice.
NobbyAnd my ambition because we.
NobbyI saw the Fisherman's Friends there some years ago with my son Neil.
JustinOkay.
NobbySee me said, they're not as good as you, dad, are they?
NobbyI Couldn't possibly comment.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
NobbySo we're praying and hoping that one day Michael Leavis Willing or Emily Evis will invite us to perform.
NobbyNot necessarily on the Pyramid.
Steve HawkinsOh, no.
NobbyAlthough I would say no Headlining.
JustinHeadlining.
NobbyMaybe, you know, maybe one of the smaller stages, the John Peel or the.
NobbyThe park stage or something.
NobbyAvalon.
NobbyBut maybe a very, very, very small stage somewhere miles away from the Pyramid.
NobbyBut please, Michael Leavis, please.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
JustinWell, listeners of this podcast, I think you need to share this podcast and tag anyone that's connected with the management of Glastonbury and get you guys on it.
NobbyMake an old man very happy.
JustinVery happy.
Steve HawkinsI'm only just the senior member.
NobbyAre you?
NobbyOnly just.
NobbyOnly just.
NobbyBut you have years of experience.
NobbyHe remembers right back.
NobbyHe was at the B.
NobbyHe was at Battle of Trafalgar.
Steve HawkinsYeah, Trafalgar.
NobbyHe was there.
JustinYou.
JustinFondest memory.
Steve HawkinsOh, fondest memory.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
Steve HawkinsOne of our memories when.
Steve HawkinsWhen the Rev and I sang down at Sidmouth Folk Festival.
NobbyAh.
Steve HawkinsAnd we thought we'd put the hat on the floor.
NobbyThe hat on the floor.
Steve HawkinsSinging away.
Steve HawkinsWe got 20p.
Nobby20P.
NobbyThe bloke that gave it to us was drunk.
NobbyOh.
NobbyAnd he sort of walked past us, stopped, and then went all back again and looked at us and put 20p in our heart.
NobbyBut we did sing, Nobby and I, and we went over with all our friends to Dublin.
Steve HawkinsTemple Bar.
NobbyNot Nobby and I sang in Temple Bar.
NobbyAnd we raised quite a bit of money there and we thought we'd sing.
Steve HawkinsA few songs and then all of a sudden there's some.
Steve HawkinsSomething going on and it was people collecting for a charity.
NobbyWe raised all this money in our heart and gave it to them.
JustinOh, wow.
NobbyI don't know what they were.
Steve HawkinsI can't remember.
NobbyIs it a nun?
NobbyYeah.
NobbyWe gave it to another.
Steve HawkinsGreat.
NobbyBecause they're always short.
NobbyYeah.
NobbyYeah.
NobbyEven everywhere.
NobbyAnywhere or anywhere, anytime.
Steve HawkinsHolland was a good one.
NobbyWas interesting.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
Steve HawkinsSinging the Brown Bird.
NobbyOh, yeah.
Steve HawkinsRotterdam.
NobbyRotterdam.
NobbyIt was.
JustinWell, you.
JustinYou know what?
JustinThis is taking you literally everywhere, isn't it?
JustinWhich is fantastic.
JustinFlying the flag for Bristol and flying the flag for.
JustinFor the charity as well.
JustinIt's so good.
NobbyWe've been as far north as Gloucester.
JustinWow.
Steve HawkinsA little bit further.
Steve HawkinsWe had a Hole, didn't we?
NobbyWe did go to Hole, but when we go to Gloucester or Cheltenham, we always pack extra woolies, don't we?
JustinYeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
NobbyIt's very cold up north.
Steve HawkinsSee where we are.
NobbyBe careful.
JustinAnd the air is thinner.
JustinSo you've Got to be careful.
NobbyOh, you could get a chill on your chest, couldn't you?
JustinYeah, that wouldn't be good.
NobbyYou have to rub some Vick on.
Steve HawkinsAbsolutely.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
NobbyTake a pot of it.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
JustinAnd a pack of Fisherman's Friends.
NobbyWell, if you'd enjoyed listening to us, listeners, we are the Port of Bristol Shanty Crew.

JustinThis won't be the last time you'll be on the podcast because I'll be hopefully joining you.
JustinAnd you've done a few.
JustinA few events that you're doing in the future.
JustinI've not been known to be a singer, but I'm certainly someone who can record well.
Steve HawkinsWell, the others said they could, and.
NobbyThey were right on the whole.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
NobbyNo, they weren't.
NobbyThey were great.
NobbyThey were great.
JustinNice.
NobbyThere's always a place for you.
NobbyYeah, that's right.
NobbyAlways.
JustinVery kind.
JustinThank you.

JustinIt's all a bit modern, isn't it?
JustinIt's all a bit modern.
NobbyWe want to spread.
NobbySean is as far as we possibly can.
JustinYeah.
NobbyDo you know we did a.
NobbyA gig at an alternative music venue in Bristol called Doo's.
JustinYeah.
NobbyAnd it was very alternative because when we went there, I couldn't understand any of the music they were playing at all.
NobbySo we got up.
NobbyWe got up on the stage and I said, ladies and gentlemen, we are the alternative to the alternative.
NobbyAnd we started singing.
NobbyThey went bonkers.
Steve HawkinsThey were.
NobbyThey were going, one more song.
NobbyYeah, one more song.
NobbyOne more song.
NobbyAnd we were basically.
NobbyI was gonna go crowd surfing.
NobbyJustin, Honestly, don't even.
NobbyOut there.
NobbyI didn't.
NobbyBut thank goodness for them.
NobbyBut imagine that shows us that these were people, most of them under the age of 18.
Steve HawkinsYeah.
NobbyThey loved it.
NobbyShani is all ages.
JustinYeah.
NobbyInternational.
NobbyYeah.
JustinIt's good, isn't it?
JustinIt's good.
JustinThere's been a few youngsters on Tick Tock doing Shantia, which has kind of made it a popular thing, and now they're.
JustinThey're hungry for more.
JustinAnd you guys are just gonna feed them, which is great.
